Premier League 2018/19 Relegation Prediction and Odds

Neill Simpson 10 th August 2018

The Premier League is not only one of the most competitive in the world for those clubs battling it out for the accolade of being crowned champions, but also for those that are having to dig deep and survive the relegation battle. Keeping hold of Premier League status is rather lucrative and those clubs that don’t manage to survive, getting back up is more often than not more difficult, than fighting to stay up.

When looking at relegation candidates it is perfectly normal to single out those that have just been promoted from the Championship, however as seen last year this isn’t always the case as all three, Brighton, Newcastle and Huddersfield all managed to survive the chop.

Looking at the three newly promoted teams for the 2018/19 Premier League campaign and how they have strengthened, I can see both Wolves and Fulham staying up. Cardiff on the other hand certainly look like they are heading straight back down, a fate that could be sealed quite some time before the end of the season.

Let’s take a look at who we think will be the bottom three for the 2018/19 Premier League season.

Premier League 2018/19 Relegation Odds – Watford 9/4

Last season Watford finished 14th, eight points clear of the drop zone, although don’t forget that was under the now Everton Manager Marco Silva. Javi Garcia has now taken over at Vicarage Road and despite his 14-years managerial experience at clubs like Malaga, Osasuna and Rubin Kazan, I get the feeling the Premier League might be a step too far.

Adding to this, their transfer window was more about shifting players on as opposed to investing in resources to survive, Richarlison moving to Everton for an overpriced £44m highlighting this. When you look at newly promoted Wolves and Fulham and their transfer activity, you immediately get the feeling that both of these clubs will fare better.

This will be Watford’s fourth consecutive season in the top flight and last, well for the next few seasons at least.

Premier League 2018/19 Relegation Odds – Huddersfield 11/10

Feel really bad having Huddersfield finishing 19th for the 2018/19 Premier League season. David Wagner did a superb job getting them promoted and an even better one keeping them up. During the summer the club showcased signs of stability by rewarding the likeable German with a new contract and converting a number of loan moves into permanent ones. There are some interesting new arrivals, Issac Mbenza, Erik Durm and Juninho Bacuna from Groningen, however I simply don’t see these players being able to deal with the physical and mental demands of Premier League survival.

They were really poor on the road last season with just the three wins, while at home they only managed to double that. Scoring goals was also a problem last season and one that will be a problem again this season.

I really hope I have called it wrong, as I would love to see them stay up. If I haven’t called it wrong, then I sincerely hope a Premier League club comes in for Wagner who is an outstanding young manager.

Premier League 2018/19 Relegation Odds – Cardiff 7/10

To say that Cardiff were not expected to be in the Premier League this season is an understatement. They absolutely overachieved in getting promotion and while they deserved all the plaudits for reaching the top flight, I’m afraid to say they don’t have a big enough appetite to eat dinner off the adults table.

It is going to be a very tough campaign for the Bluebirds, although I sincerely hope their players relish the Premier League experience.

On paper they look the weakest side in the Premier League, on the pitch they will for sure be the weakest side. With a handful of Championship signings during the transfer window, they will simply not have the quality.

I expect they will spend most, if not all of the season, at the foot of the table with their fate sealed long before the end of the campaign.
