EU Edge Glorious Day 1
As the sun beamed down on an immaculate Royal Malta Golf Club, you could feel the atmosphere building. When the top match reached the first tee, no one would wave anticipated what a weekend of golf we would have in store for us.
Team EU off to a flying start
It was Team EU that took control of Day 1 early on. In the top match, Team EU pair of Bergendahl & Lehtiniemi strolled through the first seven holes 5 up. They proved far too strong for Simpson and Foster and ran out convincing 5 & 4 winners. Sam Brown and Henry Redknapp ( not Harry ) gave the ROW side temporary rest bite. They took down Match 2 comfortably against the Swedish duo of Andersson & Elliason.
A solitary half point for the Rest of the World from the next four matches, put them firmly under pressure in the first session. Wins for Karhu & Vienonen 3 & 2 over Parkhill & Thoren, Barry & Ka 1 up against Crosby & Rikards, and a 4 & 3 routing of Dixon & Finnighan by Kjaldstrom & Westerholm saw the EU lead 4 1/2 & 1 1/2 with two games still on the course.
English Pairings Salvage Some Pride for Team ROW
Even at this early stage Team ROW could not afford to be too far behind going into Day 2.
It was Haig and Cotton the English pairing, who found some “Poulter” spirit and started the recovery. After a terrific battle they managed to come back from 1 down with three to play against Hedlund & Marchisio to claim victory 1 up.
In the final match, another all English pairing of Robertson and Carre saw off Cohen and Hanson 3 & 2. With the leader board looking very blue all afternoon, the ROW team gladly walked away just a point away behind after Day 1.
Both teams looking forward to the Saturday action and recommencing the battle.
